Every
individuals opinion regarding facebook and its effects on society and other
people are different. Facebook is an online social networking service,
discovered in February of 2004. (Wikipedia)
Since then billions of people are actively on facebook for positive and
negative reasons; but majority of all situations are effected by people who are
involved with the social network. For this blog; I discuss 2 positive and 2
negative effects that facebook has on society.
One of the two positive effects
Facebook provides, Families settled abroad want to have strong communication
with their homeland and its inhabitants.(
Homebiz Resource) In other words, for those people currently living in the
United States but want to communicate with extended family from Africa or
another county, facebook can be an option. It can show updated pictures of both
individuals or people from the opposing countries, videos, posts and private
messaging if security is important to them. This is a plus that family who live
far from each other are still able to interact through a social network until
they’re presence is current. People also
post their video chat information on Facebook so that’s available as another
option of communication for some. Another positive effect Facebook practices,
are updated news topics that effect the world or using the network to spread a
topic discussion for people to be notified. This is another form of news
hitting the media or Advertisment for other.
For example; the tragedy of the young boy from Florida, Trayvon Martin,
who was shot by a cop because he thought his skittles and juice was gun. A
controversial topic was spread throughout every social network and all through
the internet world, giving the public a rise to public agreement or public
disagreement.
People
busy in their lives feel easy to communicate through Facebook but at times it
becomes very annoying when virtual communication takes place of real life
meetings. (Homebiz Resource). This is one of the negative effects facebook
provides, From being used to always
posting without any grammar checks, you tend to speak the way you text or talk
on social networks. This lacks communication skills and knowledge, causing difficulty
for some to switch their vocabulary in proper settings, or just virtual
communication in general. An example could be my generation currently, so young
and filling their brains with non-sense tends to cause a negative effect on
speech. Last but not least, Facebook is a proven fact that it could cause
depression, anxiety and other forms of disorders. On the other hand, it also
effects young people in fully working to their full potential in
education.(LakeSide) “Studies found that middle
school, high school and college students who checked Facebook at least once
during a 15-minute study period achieved lower grades.”(LakeSide) This is when
social networks can take a toll to a negative effect when most assume these
websites can’t harm individuals but so much. Degrading pictures such as women
nude, or images of minors smoking and drinking can cause other minors to start
the same habit they picked up off the internet. This is why parent supervision
should be a factor for ages 18 and under.
Reading the
examples I’ve found and majority I didn’t discuss. This makes me aware of not
just how beneficial the internet and facebook is, but how dangerous it is to
minors that many people don’t understand. Some things a parent might not allow
or tolerate in their presence, can still be done when their not around.
Pictures being taking that parents wouldn’t approve of. The youth tends to
degrade themselves as well as their households & moral values are lost. Our
generation is so advanced and up to date, but causes a fear for elders to question
if you hear about the negativity surrounded on Facebook, how do you know your
son or daughter isn’t taking part of it.

Effects of Facebook on Society
I definitely agree with all your positives about Facebook, it really is a great way to keep in contact with people from all around the world. However, in the negative section in your post you stated that Facebook is causing people to not use correct grammar. I do see this as a problem in a small amount of people but I believe that it isn’t as bad as it seems. Text language is using acronyms to make texting easier when it first started, now that you don’t have to press the same number 2 or 3 times to get a single letter I've notice people using correct grammar and sentences in their texts. This is the same with Facebook. There are some people that do use the text language in their Facebook posts, but it doesn't mean those people don’t know proper English, it may be they choose not to.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with both of your positives, those two advantages couldn’t be any better. They both are really the only positives with regards to Facebook. However, your first negative contradicts your positive in a way. The way of communicating is good regardless of the grammar used there is still communication going on. I feel the way things are said or used has no effect on anything at all. Also, just because someone does use this type of grammar and language, does not necessarily mean they lack knowledge and education. That person could simply just be choosing to communicate in that way. Now, as for your second negative, it is very hard to argue with facts but I personally feel that if someone really wants to succeed in school they can regardless of how many times they check Facebook daily. Yes Facebook is a great way to procrastinate from homework, but so is watching TV. It’s not Facebook’s fault that the individual chooses to go one Facebook so much, they can still get their work done.
